Chapter 17: You Still Don’t Trust Me?

They stayed close to each other and remained silent in the cave. After they adapted to the darkness, Dong Ling took out a paper fire lighter from her pocket and blew it carefully. She put it in front of them and the cave was immediately brightly lit.
“Rumble…” Suddenly, there came some vibrating noise. Not someone’s stomach rumbled, but all of theirs did! They looked at one another, feeling embarrassed.
A few minutes later, Dong Ling remembered something and searched her own body. Soon, she took out the remaining food and gave it to Wu Jitian.
“You must be hungry. Take this.” said she.
Lin Zang, staying on the right, was anxious to protect his master. He said directly, “My Lord, let me try it first, in case of any problem.”
Dong Ling rolled up her eyes and glared at Lin Zang. She asked, “What? You think I poisoned it? You still don’t trust me?”
As she spoke, she stared to eat the food. Then she asked harshly, “See? Safe, isn’t it?”
Her question silenced Lin Zang. He was also starving.
Dong Ling sneered. But she still divided the food into three pieces and gave one to Lin Zang.
“It’s the last food I have. Enjoy it slowly.” Dong Ling said after fumbling her empty pocket pitifully.
“We don’t know each other. But why do you help us so much?” asked Wu Jitian.
Since he asked again, Dong Ling didn’t want to find another excuse. Consequently, she confessed, “Because I want a deal with you.”
“What deal do you mean?” asked Wu Jitian. He was right. No one would be so nice to strangers, without a reason. She must be up to something.
Dong Ling lapsed into silence. She had meant to talk about this after Wu Jitian was completely safe, in case of unexpected trouble.
Meanwhile, Wu Jitian fixed his eyes on Dong Ling, not letting go of any tiny change on her face.
Feeling his warm sight, Dong Ling pursed her lips. In the end, she made up her mind to tell the truth. She confessed, “I’m the eldest daughter of Dong Yuan from the capital city.”
Dong Yuan? Wu Jitian was shocked. He only heard of her name, Dong Feixue.
Since she was open with him, Wu Jitian also introduce himself again, “I’m Prince Jitian, the third prince of the Wu State. I used to defend the frontier.”
“Mm.” Dong Ling answered and nodded. She knew it.
“Then how did you learn the medical skills and how did you make the weapon?” Wu Jitian couldn’t help asking about what confused him most. That was also what amazed him most. Dong Ling was a young girl, but she had mastered quite a lot of skills!
Lin Zang was also curious. He pricked up his ears and waited for her answer.
Dong Ling winced. She couldn’t tell them she learnt the skills from the 21st century, could she? After a long dull silence, she reluctantly explained, “I don’t have a teacher. I learnt everything by myself.”
“Really?” Lin Zang was so surprised that he asked directly with disbelief.
“Sure.” answered Dong Ling coldly when she gave a cool glance at him.
“I wonder how old you are, Miss Dong?” asked Lin Zang again. That wasn’t really embarrassing.
Dong Ling pulled her face and answered, “I don’t want to tell you.”
It went awkwardly silent.
Soon, Wu Jitian broke the silence by asking, “What deal would you like to make with me?”
“To be honest, my father doesn’t like me. As the daughter of a concubine, I’m always mistreated. So, I fail to protect my mom.” replied Dong Ling, “I came all the way here to save you, just to try my luck. All I want is to be a general. Hope you can help me, for the sake that I saved you.”
Dong Ling cupped one hand in the other and stared at him sincerely.
She was telling the truth. Wu Jitian could tell it from her expressions. But a general was kind of too much! Therefore, he replied, without a clear answer though, “Miss Dong. Don’t worry. You saved me. And I will repay you well!”
Dong Ling was joyful already. She was good at reading people. She realized that Wu Jitian wasn’t going to make her a general for this moment. Nevertheless, they hadn’t gone out of danger yet. She didn’t need to rush.
“My Lord, I trust you.” she replied then.
Afterwards, Lin Zang voluntarily applied to keep watch at night. When the light was off, the cave fell back into silence.
