Chapter 105: New Year
Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
New Year’s Eve finally arrived. After breakfast, Ji Yuxian and Ji Ze brought Su Jiu, the Second Mistress, Madame Xie, and the others to the ancestral hall to pay their respects.
Ji Ze wore a yellowish-white robe. Set against his beautiful eyes, he emitted the aura of a scholar. Ji Yuxian followed directly behind. From the looks of it, he seemed to admire his older brother genuinely.
After the Second Mistress offered incense, she kneeled on the ground to pray, “I pray that the ancestors watch over and bless the Ji family’s business. I pray that Yuxian and the Young Mistress live a long and prosperous life. I pray that Ji Ze passes the imperial examination this spring.”
The imperial examinations, which Ji Ze was going to sit for, were taking place this spring in the third month.
Su Jiu brought Madame Xie, Madame Ren, and Madame Chen as they stepped forward to offer incense separately.
Once they left the ancestral hall, Ji Ze paid his respects to Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu before returning to his room to continue studying. The Second Mistress brought Madame Xie and the others to listen to soap operas.
Su Jiu informed Ji Yuxian before taking Chang Huan with her to the Bodyguard Agency.
It was already the 24th day of the lunar calendar. Although the commoners were all at home celebrating, the streets were still bustling with excitement and activity. The shops had hung up red lanterns and pasted auspicious couplets. It was a joyous occasion.
On the streets, jugglers and lion dancers were winding their way through the narrow alleys along the parade route, attracting the attention and applause from the crowds.
Su Jiu opened the curtains of the carriage and peeked out. She said with a laugh, “It’s so lively.”
It was as if it was her first time celebrating the New Year; everything she saw seemed fresh and tantalizing.
Chang Huan, who was driving the carriage, turned his head back. “I heard it would be this busy until the Lantern Festival!”
Su Jiu had brought wine with her, the jugs clattering from the movement of the carriage. They traveled down the street and weaved through the crowd and slowly made their way to the Bodyguard Agency.
Inside the agency, people were busy with their preparations for the New Year. Enormous banners with the word “Prosperity” appeared above the entrance. Ah Shu was in the middle of instructing a few bodyguards to position the firecrackers when he saw Su Jiu come in. He immediately ran to welcome her, the corners of his mouth filled with happiness and joy.
Inside the rear courtyard, Cao Datou and Hu Dapao were exchanging moves with the other bodyguards as the aroma of mean wafted into the yard temptingly.
At this point, the Qinglong Bodyguard Agency already had nearly two hundred men. When they saw Su Jiu, they all greeted respectfully in unison, “We pay respects to Ninth Master.”
She looked stunning in her light blue robe and large fox cloak. With her jet-black hair pulled tightly in a bun, she was as fresh and lovely as a mountain stream. “We’re all brothers. No need for all the formality,” she said lightly.
She instructed the people standing behind her to carry the jugs of wine over and said, “My fellow brothers have suffered at work. Today is the New Year. Please help yourself to the wine.”
The two hundred bodyguards filled the entire courtyard and celebrated in joy.
Cao Datou stepped forward and smiled as he said, “Ninth Master, will you be spending the New Year with us?”
Su Jiu grinned, “I still have matters to attend to. You guys can drink on your own. There’s wine, and there’s meat.”
“Wonderful,” ao Datou laughed heartily.
As she left, Ah Shu and Hu Dapao followed her. Ah Shu said, “Ninth Master, in the past on Yuhu mountain, we were so poor we couldn’t celebrate the New Year. But even so, we were all together. This year we have to have dinner together, no matter what. Later, we’ll go to the restaurant to visit Master An and will wait for you there.”
Su Jiu nodded her head. “Sure, you guys can tell Master An I’ll be there. Wait for me.”
“All right. “Hu Dapao and Ah Shu grinned and nodded energetically.
Once she left the Bodyguard Agency, Su Jiu went to the venue where the crew was training. The members of the Qingfeng Gang had already pledged their loyalty to the Dragon Conqueror Gang and were under the management of Xue Ying. When Su Jiu went over, she gave them silver and wine. After staying for a while, she left with Chang Huan and returned to Ji Manor in a horse carriage.
She arrived at dusk. Red clouds covered the sky and shined on the eaves of Ji Manor’s roof. The glass reflected an array of hues–such a magnificent sight.
Inside the study of Cloud Pavilion, Ji Yuxian was leaning lazily on his armchair, taking a nap. The fragrant incense on the table was burning as its gentle fumes swirled calmly. The noise from outside traveled in, emphasizing the stillness of the room.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door three times. In walked Jin Feng. “Master, the Young Mistress has returned,” he announced.
Ji Yuxian opened his eyes, and the light blinded him. He looked around before slowly getting up, “Where?”
“She went back to Perched Phoenix Pavilion!”
Ji Yuxian muttered in acknowledgment and stepped out of his room.
The sky was already black when Ji Yuxian entered the Perched Phoenix Pavilion. A dazzling light flashed overhead, followed by Boom! Pop! Whooosh!, as fireworks exploded, sending sparks into the courtyard.
Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, the four maidservants, as well as Mrs. Fan, nanny, and Chang Huan, were setting off firecrackers. Su Jiu stood under the plum blossom tree, her head raised, her eyes filled with the reflection of the dazzling starlight.
Ji Yuxian slowly walked over and stood right next to the girl. He held her hand and raised his head to watch them set off the fireworks together.
Su Jiu turned her head. The colorful shadows fell on her delicate and beautiful face.
At that moment, the entire sky blanketed with fireworks seemed to pale in comparison to her vibrant smile.
After they finished setting off the fireworks, Ji Yuxian brought Su Jiu over to the dining room to eat dinner. There was going to be a family reunion dinner.
As they went in, the Second Mistress, as well as Madame Xie and the others, were already inside waiting. The Second Mistress was sitting in the middle drinking tea. At the same time, Madame Xie and Madame Ren were seated at her side, saying some sort of auspicious words causing her to laugh. Madame Chen was standing obediently at the side and pouring tea.
When they saw Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu walk in, the crowd immediately rose and ran over to greet them.
The Second Mistress smiled, “This year, our Yue Jiu married into the family. The more, the merrier, in the coming year, if we can add a son to our family, it will be a huge fortune to Ji Manor.”
Ji Yuxian smiled faintly, “As the Second Mistress says.”
Madame Xie and Madame Ren stood behind the Second Mistress. Their eyes flickered, and their expressions changed.
“Come, let’s all have a seat.”
The Second Mistress called out to Su Jiu benevolently.
Everyone sat down as several maidservants came forward one by one and served various dishes onto the large wood table engraved with intricate patterns. After arranging the platters and bowls of food, they went and stood at the side to serve wine.
Because there were women present, Ji Ze only made a short appearance. He toasted Ji Yuxian, Su Jiu, and the Second Mistress before taking his leave.
Everybody was feeling joyous in the New Year; the atmosphere at the dinner table couldn’t have been more harmonious.
Xie Ying poured some wine and said in a mellow voice,” This concubine toasts Master and wishes Master good health and prosperity in the year to come.”
“Let’s all toast together.” The Second Mistress also raised her cup as she said gently, “Let’s all give a toast to Ji Yuxian and the Young Mistress. May they have a happy New Year, and may everything will go well for them.”
Madame Ren and Madame Chen raised their glasses, “A toast to Master and the Young Mistress.”
No matter how they felt before, in front of Ji Yuxian, they had to give him face.
Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu.
Both responded with a smile.
“In the past, this concubine was ignorant and had an altercation with the Young Mistress. I hope the Young Mistress can let bygones be bygones this New Year.” Madame Xie walked over and personally poured a cup of wine for Su Jiu. She said this gently with a smile, but the corner of her eyes, however, were focused on Ji Yuxian.
The corner of Su Jiu’s lips hooked up into a faint smile, “The Second Young Mistress is too courteous.”
The Second Mistress responded with a smile. “This is how it should be. It’s Yu Xian’s fortune if you both get along.”
Madame Ren and Madame Chen had also toasted Su Jiu separately. It was a happy and harmonious scene. The meal lasted until it was nearly midnight. Su Jiu went back to her room, complaining that she was drunk. She took a bath before lying in bed and drifting off to sleep.
Because it was a reunion dinner today, most of the people present were women. The fruit wine they drank had a low alcohol content. Did she get drunk over a few glasses?
Ji Yuxian’s lips curved into a subtle smile. He covered her with a blanket and drew the curtains of the bed before walking out of the bedroom.
In the amount of time it takes to brew a pot of tea, Su Jiu silently got up when she did not hear any more movements outside.
It was impossible to talk about leaving the manor with Ji Yuxian. She could only leave secretly.
She changed into a male robe, tied her hair up, and put on a pair of boots. Su Jiu’s figure was like a stealthy cat as she left in a flash.
Chang Huan had already prepared a carriage and was waiting for her at the back gate. Su Jiu hid from the patrolling guards in the manor before quickly leaping toward the back gate suddenly.
As she crossed paths and weaved through the corridors, Su Jiu’s body was like a gust of wind that swept through the night.
As she was crossing a courtyard, a flash blasted toward her. Su Jiu reacted instantly and flipped backward. When she saw the rockery in front of her, she asked sternly, “Who is it?”
“I haven’t asked you yet. Where did you come from, you thief? How dare you steal from Ji Manor!”
Along with the clear voice that resonated, a man dressed in white walked out from behind the rockery. Under the shadows of the many lanterns, he stood upright, with elegance.
Who was this person? Why was he in the Ji Manor?
She had never seen him before.
Su Jiu looked at him with curiosity, “Who are you?”
The man smiled slightly, “I’m someone who catches thieves.”
Su Jiu’s eyebrows furrowed. She leaped forward and clawed at the man’s throat as she asserted coldly, “I think you’re the one who’s a thief!”
The man dressed in white smiled with his eyes. His body, light as the wind and as fluid as flowing water, dodged Su Jiu’s vicious attack. He laughed mockingly, “So aggressive? You attacked with no quells!”
“I’ll just attack you,” Su Jiu responded before she twisted her body back and sent a fist flying toward the man’s chest.
Her hand narrowly brushed past his shoulders. The man flipped backward to dodge her. He smiled and said, “Such ferocious martial arts. I almost couldn’t keep my life intact. You can continue stealing. I won’t bother with you anymore, all right?”
Su Jiu rushed forward like the wind and sent a kick at the man’s lower body. “Hey! Take that!”
She moved swiftly as the wind brushed past her legs. The man didn’t put up much fight to counter her move and felt a sharp pain in his legs. He had barely escaped as he laughed, “I was wrong. I beg the Young Mistress to spare my life.”
Su Jiu’s attack slowed in that instant.
She frowned and questioned, “You know who I am?”
That person grinned, “I have behaved rudely. We shall meet again!”
After he said this, his figure flashed, and he leaped away. Very soon, his shadow was nowhere to be seen.
Su Jiu looked in the direction where he had disappeared. Her brows knitted tightly. Who was this person?
He knew her identity, but she had never seen him in Ji Manor before. The person’s martial arts were light and swift and not below her skills.
Meanwhile, Chang Huan was still waiting outside the gate. Su Jiu didn’t ponder the situation for too long and hastily made her way out of the manor.
When he saw Su Jiu come out, Chang Huan opened the carriage door, “Boss, why have you only come out now?”
“Mm, I was interrupted halfway. Let’s go quickly!” Su Jiu replied.
“Sure thing,” Chang Huan responded and raised the riding crop. He drove the carriage out of the back gate and traveled down the street.
Ji Yuxian was in his room playing chess on his own. When he heard footsteps approaching, he didn’t even turn his head. He simply poured himself a cup of tea and smiled, “Just came back?”
“Mm, after I was done sorting matters, I rushed back. It’s already good that I managed to get back by the first day of New Year.” The man dressed s clad in white slowly walked forward and smiled. He sat opposite Ji Yuxian and lazily leaned on the cushion.
“Oh right, just now, when I came in, I met your Young Mistress. She looked as if she was sneaking out,” the man raised his eyebrows and laughed.
Ji Yuxian nodded his head slightly and gave off a gentle smile, “Let her go out to play for a while. If not, she will get bored and throw a tantrum at me again.”
When he heard the man’s doting tone of voice, the man who dressed in white raised his eyebrows slightly. He grinned, “Your Young Mistress’s martial arts are not bad. Her character seems interesting, as well.”
Ji Yuxian raised his head abruptly. “You provoked her?”
“I didn’t. Why are you so anxious?” The man who was clad in white smiled slightly and said innocently, “She was the one who came forward to attack me. Fortunately, I could escape quickly, if not, you would be the one collecting my corpse!”
Ji Yuxian’s narrow eyes turned cold, “You provoked my wife, and even want me to collect your corpse. Did you think I was such a good-natured person?”
The man sighed, “I knew it. Did you fall for her? You don’t even care for your friend anymore?”
Ji Yuxian’s hand, which was about to place a chess piece down, froze for a moment. Then, he continued to play chess in silence.
“Eldest Young Master Ji, spill the beans. What are your plans? Are you really planning to make her the Mistress of Ji Manor? A woman of your rear court?”
Ji Yuxian slowly placed the chess piece down. After a pause, he replied, “She’s not the real Su Yuejiu, and she is no ordinary woman of my rear court. But our husband and wife relationship is real. If I help her, I am also helping myself. And it doesn’t stop me from doting on her.”
The man in white was stunned, “She is not Su Yuejiu? What happened?”
“The real Su Yuejiu was stopped on the road to the capital and was killed by mountain bandits. She is also a mountain bandit and disguised herself as Su Yuejiu to enter the capital.” Ji Yuxian’s said casually in a steady voice.
The man in white stared at him blankly. After a pause, he suddenly laughed, “You encountered such an interesting matter. I admire you!”
Ji Yuxian looked up and glanced at him. He said with a smile, “She also has a ‘maidservant’ who is also a mountain bandit. That person is also fascinating. Why don’t I give her to you as a reward for working so hard this year?”
The man in white shrugged, “Forget it. I prefer to have freedom.”
The two of them conversed and laughed for a while. Jin Feng served some snacks, and the two men discussed the business in Jiangnan as they drank.
When both Su Jiu and Chang Huan reached the restaurant, Qiao An, Ah Shu, and the others had already been waiting for a few hours. They had been looking out anxiously, and when they saw the horse carriage, they immediately rejoiced.
Su Jiu walked in and saw Cao Datou. Li Tai and his daughter were also there. They all came forward to greet her, “We pay respects to Master. May Master be blessed with prosperity and good health!”
“May everything go well for the Master this New Year!” Li Qin was turning twelve soon. Her face was full of smiles as she paid her respects; the disposition of a young lady was slowly shining forth.
“Good.” Su Jiu smiled happily. She took out a red packet and passed it to her. “This is for your birthday!”
“Master does not need to.” Li Tai immediately pushed the red packet back.
“We are all one family. What is there to be polite about?” Su Jiu said as she shoved the red packet into Li Qin’s hands.
Li Qin smiled sweetly and said crisply, “Thank you, Master.”
Everyone gathered around where Su Jiu sat. On the table, a piping hot steamboat was placed, along with various hotpot ingredients, as well as beggar’s chicken and other dishes.
The restaurant had already closed for the day, and they were the only table in the whole hall.
Qiao An turned to the waiter who was serving the dishes, “Once the dishes are served, you don’t have to wait around. Go back and celebrate the New Year. You don’t have to get up early tomorrow. It’s also fine if you get drunk.”
The few waiters excitedly acknowledged his words, and after paying their respects to Su jiu, they turned and went back to the kitchen.
“Come, let’s all toast our chief!” Qiao An raised a glass and smiled.
“A toast to our chief!”
Ah Shu, Hu Dapao, Chang Huan, Cao Datou, as well as Li Tai, all raised their glasses as one and shouted.
Su Jiu held her wine with both hands. “In the past, all of you suffered together with me. This year is the first time we celebrate the New Year with wine and meat. I hope that we will continue to rise in the future and spread the name of our Dragon Conqueror Gang. May we enjoy wine and meat every year.”
“Right, to wine and meat every year!” Everyone cheered and gulped down the wine from their bowls.
Cao Datou poured out a full bowl of wine and wiped his mouth with his sleeves as he said to Su Jiu, “Ninth Master, let’s forget our previous grievances. In the future, I, Cao Datou, will be loyal to the Ninth Master and will not betray you!”
“Good, I trust you. Toast!” Su Jiu smiled lightly.
Cao Datou suddenly felt choked up. He didn’t speak and only raised his head to gulp down the wine.
Li Qin, who was watching from the side, said in admiration, “When I grow up, I also want to join the Dragon Conqueror Gang and accomplish things with Master.”
Li Tai laughed, “What nonsense. You’re a lady. How could you work with the Master?”
Everyone else laughed. Li Qin became embarrassed and blushed. She stood by Li Tai’s side without saying anything.
The palace was also very lively at night. The feast continued late into the night. The carriage belonging to Prince Rui’s manor drove into the streets and toward the manor.
Xiao Lie sat inside the horse carriage as his hands massaged his temples. Persistent fatigue from the fun and entertainment was evident between his brows.
But when he thought of the cold and dreary manor, he felt reluctant to return.
Xiao Lie lifted the curtains of the carriage. In the distance, the sound of firecrackers and the laughter of the children could be heard faintly. His black eyes stilled, and a spark flashed in his eyes. He ordered, “Don’t return to the manor. Head to Yongan Street!”
The carriage driver acknowledged his instruction and made a U-turn at the end of the street before speeding off in the direction of Yongan Street.
Although the commoners’ houses could not compare to the palace in terms of clothing and food, they felt homelier. Once the horse carriage hit the streets, Xiao Lie’s expression slowly relaxed.
The carriage stopped outside the restaurant. The light passed through the windows, and the sound of laughter could be heard even before he walked in. That sort of hearty laugh came from the heart. It was completely different from the formalities, flattery, and false smiles seen in the palace.
Xiao Lie stood right there and listened to the lively chatter inside and the warmth brought by the lanterns. At that moment, he did not knock on the door to enter in fear that his cold and frigidness would rub off onto the laughter inside.
After standing there for a while, Xiao Lie was reluctant to leave and eventually went forward to knock on the door.
The waiter came to open the door. He said, “Guest, we’re closed for today. Do come another day.”
“I’m looking for Su Jiu,” Xiao Lie said as he raised his head to look at the crowd drinking wine in the hall.
Thinking she heard a sound from the side, Su Jiu just so happened to look over. Two pairs of eyes met. The man gazed profoundly and gave a warm smile.
Su Jiu immediately got up, “It’s the New Year. Why have you come?”
Qiao An and the rest also followed her and came over. Although some of them did not recognize Xiao Lie, when they saw that it was Su Jiu’s friend, they also got up to greet him.
Xiao Lie walked up and smiled, “I knew it would be happening here, so I came to join in the fun. Am I not welcome?”
“You’re welcome! Of course, you’re welcome. The more, the merrier!” Su Jiu laughed and called the waiter over, “Add a set of utensils.”
Xiao Lie sat next to Su Jiu, and Su Jiu introduced him to everyone else, “This is Master Su, my friend.”
Qiao An and Hu Dapao, as well as a few others, recognized him. It was Cao Datou and Li Tai’s first time meeting Xiao Lie. They raised a glass and said, “Ninth Master’s friends are also our friends. Here’s a toast to Master Su.”
When they drank wine, they didn’t use cups but directly drank from the bowl. Xiao Lie looked elegant and noble even when holding the bowl. He smiled faintly and raised his head to finish it in one shot.
“Master Su is a straightforward person, no wonder you are friends with Ninth Master,” Cao Datou chuckled.
Everyone else refilled their bowls and laughed and talked without any restraint, giving off a sense of comfort.
Li Qin hid behind Li Tai’s back and occasionally took a few glances at Xiao Lie. She felt that his demeanor was full of grace and dignity, different from other boys out there. He was also good looking and charming. As she stared at him, she felt her ears turning red.
Everyone chattered and drank. No one noticed that Li Qin was behaving strangely.
“May the coming year be prosperous and may all be well with you.” Xiao Lie lips were stained with a relaxed smile as he clinked his cup with Su Jiu’s.
“You too!” Su Jiu’s eyes gleamed.
Xiao Lie’s eyes darkened, and he smiled faintly, “I’m glad I got to know you, Su Jiu!”
Su Jiu drank quite a lot of wine that night. Her face was flushed, as though she had applied a thick layer of blush, emphasizing the brightness of her eyes. “We met because, well, we fought, me, and him, and them, we got to know each other the same way. Fought and fought, and suddenly we were brothers.”
Su Jiu pointed at Hu Dapao and Ah Shu’s figures.
Hu Dapao and Ah Shu were in the middle of playing scissors, paper, stone. When they heard Su Jiu speak, they turned over and shouted, “Chief, you’re talking about our past again, let me tell you, at that time we all let win. You were as skinny as a monkey and fought so desperately!”
“Get lost!” Su Jiu laughed and scolded, “If you couldn’t beat me, it means you couldn’t beat me. Why are you looking for an excuse!”
Xiao Lie smiled faintly at the side. He used his chopsticks to pass some meat to Su Jiu and muttered casually in a low voice, “I am the same as them? Isn’t there a little bit of a difference?”
Su Jiu turned her head. Her eyes were inches away from the man’s deep-set eyes. The smile on her face was still there as she asked, “What?”
Xiao Lie’s lips hooked into a smile. He slowly moved back a little, “Nothing much. I just really admire the fact that you have friends who have been through life and death with you.”
Su Jiu’s eyes were sincere, “Us too!”
Xiao Lie’s smile deepened. Further, he raised his arm and held the girl’s hand and said casually, “Don’t forget what you said today.”
“Of course!” Su Jiu raised her brows.
Qiao An was in the middle of chatting with Li Tai when his vision swept past Su Jiu and Xiao Lie. His eyes froze slightly before he smiled and raised a glass, “Last time, when our Ninth Master was locked up in prison, we need to thank Master Su for the rescue. Here’s a toast to Master Su.”
Xiao Lie’s demeanor was dignified and cordial as he said, “Shopkeeper Qiao is too polite. There is no need for thanks between Su Jiu and me.”
Qiao An smiled awkwardly, “Yes, I am only representing the few of us to thank Master Su!”
“Good!” Xiao Lie poured out some wine and chugged it down.
They kept drinking until it was close to midnight before they went their ways. Hu Dapao, Ah Shu, and the rest got drunk as usual. Qiao An and Li Tai supported them upstairs to rest.
Su Jiu instructed Chang Huan to send Li Tai and his daughter back to Xieyang street before personally sending Xiao Lie out.
“It’s less than an hour before the New Year. I’m pleased to be with you until the last moment!” Standing at the door of the restaurant, Xiao Lie suddenly turned back and said.
At this point, the street had already quietened down, but fireworks continued to sound above. The shadows reflected on their head as the glitter in the sky shined in resplendence.
Su Jiu’s eyes were clear and bright, “Me too!”
Xiao Lie’s eyes deepened as he said warmly, “I’m leaving now!”
Su Jiu nodded her head, “Be careful on the road!”
She watched as Xiao Lie boarded the horse carriage and departed onto the long and quiet street. Just as she was about to turn around and head back into the restaurant, she suddenly saw the horse carriage parked opposite the road and froze.
A hint of guilt flashed across Su Jiu’s face as she slowly walked over.
Jin Feng leaped off the horse carriage, “Young Mistress!”
Su Jiu chuckled and got up the horse carriage. As she pushed open the door, she saw a pair of captivating phoenix eyes as the man raised his head to look over.
“Why are you here?” Su Jiu asked.
“I lost my wife in the middle of the night and could only come out to search for her and bring her home!” The man lowered his voice. His lips had curved into a grin as he looked silently at her.
After he said this, he sighed softly, “Not only did you run off in the middle of the night, you got yourself drunk. Even if we set this aside, you actually had such an intimate conversation with another man. You were so reluctant to part with him. Your husband is hurting!”
Su Jiu frowned, “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Ji Yuxian extended his hand towards her, “Can you follow your husband back home now?”
Su Jiu raised her hand and wanted to slap his hand away, but was caught off guard when he suddenly tugged on to her. She fell into this embrace.
The man wrapped around her waist with one arm and held onto her chin with the other. His phoenix eyes stared evilly at her as he instructed Jin Feng, “Return to the manor!”
“Yes!” Jin Feng replied and started the horse carriage. The carriage broke the stillness of the night and slowly drove towards the Ji Manor.
“I am miserable. What should we do?” The man locked his eyes on the girl. His thin lips glistened as he whispered.
The fragrance of lotus permeated the air. The effects of the alcohol surged as Su Jiu’s eyes became hazy. Her mind blanked out, and she raised her head slightly and kissed the man on his lips with her eyes closed. It was as though the sloppy kiss was to appease him.
The girl’s lips were soft and pliable, and the smell of alcohol was intoxicating. Her little tongue slid like a slippery fish as she played with his lips. The man, however, remained still. His black eyes were opened slightly as he stared silently at here.
Su Jiu became frustrated and pushed forward with both hands. She pressed the man onto the thick fur rug and kissed him deeply.
It might have been because the man felt pain when she bit her, the man groaned and flipped over, pressing the girl under his body. He started to kiss her savagely as if he was venting it out and punishing her.
Su Jiu’s mind was in turmoil. She shut her eyes as they devoured each other, flipping over. It was just like a fight, and none of them were willing to submit to the other. It was a fight to the death.
Ji Yuxian only stopped when he tasted fresh blood. He gave in to her kiss and responded gently.
“Su Jiu…”
The man shut his eyes and said in a low voice. His hand slowly slipped into her undergarments and felt her soft and tender skin. His breathing was rough as he muttered gravely, “Shall we re-enact the drawings?”
Before, he had not wanted to force her. But today, he suddenly tried to conquer her, not wanting to wait for a second longer.
For the first time, his heartfelt uncertain, and he felt threatened.
Re-enact the drawings?
Su Jiu’s face reddened, and she stopped kissing the man. Instead, he leaned on his shoulder to catch her breath.
After a pause, she slowly shook her head, “Not yet, I haven’t made up my mind.”
“When will you decide? “The man caressed her checks and laughed, “You almost took me by force just now, you still haven’t decided?”
The horse carriage veered slightly to aside. The two of them were entangled, and it was almost as though their heartbeats were indistinguishable. Su Jiu’s face became even reader as she kept quiet.
The two of them no longer said anything, and the only thing that could be heard was the sound of the carriage creaking. As midnight approached, the sound of firecracker being set off in the city could be heard continually in the background. Fireworks exploded in the sky, and their dazzling sparks crept into the horse carriage, lighting up the darkness within it.
After a while, the sound of steady breathing could be heard within his arms. Ji Yuxian stroked the girl’s black hair as he smiled faintly.
She was in his arms, and so, he did not need to hurry and, instead, continue to wait patiently.
The next day, Su Jiu recovered from her intoxication and woke up. The only thing she felt was a throbbing headache. The moment she opened her eyes, she saw the man’s mocking smile as he stared at her. He didn’t need to say a word for her to understand that he meant to say, “Serves you right.”
Su Jiu turned her body over to continue sleeping.
Ji Yuxian pulled her up, “My wife, it’s time to wake up. The people who have come to pay their respects have already been waiting for you for one hour!”
Su Jiu pretended to be exhausted and refused to get out of bed, “Pay what respects? I want to sleep, and nobody is to disturb me!”
Ji Yuxian frowned and extended his arms to carry her up. He helped her put on the new clothes that he had prepared for her beforehand. When he saw that she was still a little groggy, he could only take a sip of ice water and feed it into her mouth.
As the refreshing fragrance of plums slid down her throat, Su Jiu felt more alert, and her head no longer hurt as much.
“Good!” Ji Yuxian massaged her temples and carried her to the dressing table. He turned around and ordered, “You may come in!”
Nanny and Mrs. Fan immediately came in, holding a basin of water a well as a silk handkerchief. Behind them, Mo Yu and a few other maidservants brought in New Year goodies such as hibiscus cakes and other snacks. Each of them wore a set of new clothes. Their faces were full of festivity as they greeted with respect, “This servant greets the Young Mistress and pays her respects. May the Young Mistress have a prosperous New Year!”
Su Jiu smiled slightly, “May you all have a Happy New Year too!”
A few people returned the greeting. After helping Su Jiu take a bath, Nanny and Mo Yu did her hair and make-up, while a few maidservants fed Su Jiu some pastries.
Su Jiu was not used to this and placed the pastries into her mouth herself after thanking them.
That day, Su Jiu’s hairdo was extraordinarily intricate and complex. Both sides of her bun were fastened with red coral ornaments that were double knotted as a symbol of prosperity. In the middle was a phoenix tassel. Strings of crystal pearls hung between her brows, emphasizing her delicate, jade-like face.
Her brows were drawn up, her face dusted with powder, balm was dabbed on her lips… Su Jiu looked at her delicate and exquisite reflection in the mirror and almost did not recognize herself.
Mo Yu brought over a pair of shoes embroidered with five branches of lotus and knelt to help Su Jiu put them on.
“It’s done!” Nanny looked warmly at Su Jiu and took her to leave with the rest of the servants.
Su Jiu turned around and laughed, “What do I need to do dressed like this?”
JI Yuxian was sitting at the side of sipping tea. When he heard her voice, he turned his head, and surprise flashed across his eyes. His wife was a stunning beauty. Her make-up was done so elaborately. As her husband, he was full of pride.
Taking two steps forward, Ji Yuxian pulled her by the hand and walked out, “Let’s go,”
The dress that Su Jiu wore was made with Yuehua brocade. As she walked, the skirt fluttered. If the faint moonlight reflected on the water of a jade lake, its beauty would not be able to compare to the allure of her tall and slender figure, as well as her beautiful face.
Ji Yuxian held Su Jiu’s hand and walked towards the sitting room. Once inside, Su Jiu was shocked!
So many people!
In the room, there were not only Ji Yuxian’s three concubines and the Second Mistress, but there were also many other unfamiliar faces, both male and female. The men were in the west section, while the women were in the east section. The entire room was filled with people, all clustered in conversation.
When they saw Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu enter, everyone quietened down and went over to pay their respects.
Su Jiu raised her eyebrows and looked at Ji Yuxian. Who were all these people?
The Second Mistress took a step forward and smiled gently, “Yue Jiu, let me introduce you. This is the Second Uncle’s eldest son and his mistress.”
“This is the Second Master and the Second Master’s Mistress!”
“This is the eldest miss of the Third Distant Uncle, Ji Yun.”
“This is the Second Miss, Ji Yao.”
…
The Second Mistress introduced them one by one. They were all the relatives of the Ji family. Once she had been introduced to everyone, Su Jiu did not even manage to remember a single person.
All the girls looked at her shyly, or in fright, or admiration as they came forward one by one to pay their respects.
The patriarch of the Ji Manor was the eldest in the family. Hence, during the New Year, everybody had to come over to visit and pay their respects.
After receiving greetings and well wishes from everyone, Nanannyassed out red packets to the relatives in the younger generation.
Su Jiu glanced at Ji Yuxian and knew that he had already arranged all this beforehand.
After busying the entire morning, everyone finally left. Nanny was Buddhist and did not sleep the whole night as she kept vigil. She was feeling a little tired and went back to rest.
Xie Ying and Ren Zhi’er both crowded around Ji Yuxian as they fussed over his well-being and refused to leave. In the end, they were sent back by Ji Yuxian himself.
Before Madame Chen left, she tipped a small purse over to Su Jiu, “I embroidered this. Yu Chan made this as a New Year’s gift for the Young Mistress. I hope Young Mistress will keep it well.”
Ji Yuxian had three concubines. Only Madame Chen’s personality was meek, and she always treated Su Jiu with respect. Previously, they were admiring the flowers in the plum garden together, when Su Jiu casually mentioned that the pastries were delicious. Following that, Chen Yuchan would personally prepare and send them over to the Perched Phoenix Pavilion every few days. Although she did not even ask for favors and was always deficient key, she made other people feel comfortable.
Su Jiu accepted the purse. She saw that a single lotus flower had been embroidered on it. Its hem was stitched with silver thread, while the red thread was used to fill in the color. It was extremely exquisite.
“It looks beautiful. Thank you!” Su Jiu smiled.
“As long as the Young Mistress likes it. This concubine will take her to leave!”
Chen Yuchan smiled shyly and turned around to leave.
Since she didn’t sleep well last night, Su Jiu planned to take a nap after lunch. As a result, she fell into a deep sleep and only woke up at dusk when the sky was already turning dark.
Ji Yuxian got someone to warm up the wine, and both of them laughed and drank deep into the night. When they went out, they set off some firecrackers together. The first day of the New Year passed just like this.
Starting from the second day of the new year, many families began holding feasts and invited Ji Yuxian and Su Jiu to come together. Su Jiu went for a few of them and found it annoying. Following that, she made up excuses and refused to go.
On the fifth day of the New Year, Su Jiu had just got out of bed. As Mo Yu helped her as she took a bath, she mentioned, “Young Mistress, Miss Lan is here!”
Su Jiu acknowledged, “Mm, Ji Yuxian is in the study. Ask her to go there directly!”
Mo Yu said, “Miss Lan is here to greet the Young Mistress.”
Su Jiu raised her eyebrows slightly.
When she went over after taking her bath, Lan Zhihui was seated at the side of the room, drinking tea. She wore an ash-purple blouse made from Yuehua brocade, as well as a blue skirt embroidered intricately with a thousand butterflies. On the outside, she had put on a feathered coat made of satin. She sat upright elegantly, her demeanor prim and proper.
In the past, Lan Zhihui used to wear mostly everyday clothing with the simplicity of a water lotus. It might have been because it was the New Year, she wore more vibrant colors that day, accentuating her beauty which was comparable to peach blossoms.
The beautiful woman heard a voice and raised her head. She observed that the clothes Su Jiu was wearing were made from that roll of Yuehua Brocade. The embroidery was exquisite, and it had been tailored to fit her perfectly. The color of the clothes complimented her fair skin, making her look brilliant.
That roll of Yuehua brocade was used to make a total of three sets of clothes. They were all made by her, and the outfit that Su Jiu wore that day was the third set.
Lan Zhihui lowered her head. Her half-closed eyes darkened faintly. She moved forward elegantly and bowed as she greeted.
“Zhi Hui pays respects to the Young Mistress!”
Beautiful women did not need to speak much. A single smile could touch the hearts and eyes of others.
Su Jiu hurriedly went forward to support her, “Miss, please get up!”
Lan Zhi Hui took a step back and looked up with a dignified smile, “Today, our store be holding a Fangshuyan. Zhi Hui has especially come to invite Young Mistress to attend.”
The Fangshuyan was a banquet specially organized by the Robes Square. It was held annually on the fifth day of the New year, and everyone who was invited was the daughters and mistresses from noble families. They came together to guess riddles, admire the flowers, and chat. In truth, the main goal of hosting such an event was to unveil the new embroideries, colors, and accessories of the Robes Square for the coming year.
Because of the high standing of the Robes Square, as well as the reputation of Lan Zhihui, the Fangshuyan was very famous in Shengjing City. Many girls from large noble families, as well as wealthy shopkeepers, all considered receiving Lan Zhihui’s invitation a great honor.
“In the past, when Master was not yet married, the banquet was always organized by Zhi Hui. This year, since Young Mistress is around, Zhi Hui does not dare to take this role and came personally to invite the Young Mistress to host it instead!” Lan Zhihui said gently.
Su Jiu shook her head and rejected the offer, “No need, I know nothing about the matters of the Robe Square. I would not be able to introduce the newly debuted embroidered goods and accessories to others. It would be best if Miss hosts it instead!”
“This…” Lan Zhihui hesitated for a while, before smiling magnanimously, “Then I will accept Young Mistress’ generosity and host the banquet. But I must implore Young Mistress to attend, if not Zhi Hui will be lacking in manners and will not feel assured.”
Su Jiu did not have anything matters to attend to these few days. Since the beautiful women had put things this way, Su Jiu’s heart softened, and she made a promise, “Alright, I will go then!”
“Thank you for your grace!” Lan Zhihui smiled faintly and held Su Jiu’s hand, “The Misses of nobility are probably almost here. Let us go!”
Su Jiu nodded her head. She sent Mo Yu to notify Ji Yuxian before taking her to leave with Lan Zhihui.
